Meiji to Murakami: Japanese art at the Art Gallery of NSW, 1879 to now

Art & Culture

Before it even had a building, the Art Gallery of New South Wales had a collection of Japanese art. In 1879, following the Sydney International Exhibition of the same year, the Japanese Commissioners for the exhibition donated a group of Meiji ceramics and bronzes to the Gallery. The Japanese collection now ranges from historical sculptures and folding screens to modern ceramics and prints, as well as contemporary art.

Melanie Eastburn, senior curator of Asian art at AGNSW, will discuss the Gallery’s Japanese collection and highlights.
